circa 1897 oil, canvas 55.0×46.0cm

After retreating to his native district of Aix-en-Provence, Cézanne busied himself with the famous Card Players series, the models for which were peasants and gardeners who worked nearby, and this peasant portrait is believed to have been created while that series was in progress. A work, in which features characteristic of Cézanne – such as the solid composition and the bare patches of canvas – are exploited to good effect.
