Though it was in 1825 that Corot first visited Italy, the object of his longings, this work was painted half a century later. The Borromean Islands are some of the many islets that rise out of northern Italy’s scenic Lake Maggiore. The work is typical of Corot’s late years, with small figures set amid scenery shrouded in a silver-grey haze.
