Delacroix joined the French government mission to Morocco in late 1831 as its painter of record. His six months of travels there subsequently formed an important source of images for him. The Arab at the Grave is one of his works drawn from this source. The man sitting beside the grave is Ben-Abu, who was one of the Moroccan King’s Royal Guards and served as captain of the guard protecting the French government mission.
