Gaugin stayed in the small Breton village of Pont-Aven from the summer to the autumn of 1886. With its innocently playing children, the stark simplicity of its scenery and other unspoiled traits, Brittany was a kind of Arcadia for Gaugin, who had developed a loathing for civilization. That sentiment would eventually lead him to Tahiti.
