The Pont-Neuf is one of the oldest bridges in Paris and spans the Île de la Cité, which is an island in the River Seine. The semicircular building in the distance is the Samaritaine department store, and an equestrian statue of Henri IV can be seen on the center of the bridge. At this period Marquet’s studio was on the fifth floor of an apartment building located in front of the scene in the picture – he could look directly out at the Pont Neuf from the window.
