There are over 30 bridges across the River Seine where it flows through Paris, and the Pont-Neuf (“New Bridge”), which traverses the Île de la Cité to link the river’s Left and Right Banks, is – contrary to its name – one of the oldest. From 1900 on, Pissarro rented an apartment in the Île de la Cité looking out on this bridge and the Right Bank to use for executing in winter, and he painted this view in various different weathers.
