《Pierrot》

1937-38 oil, canvas 99.8×65.1cm

Rouault remarked, “I myself am a clown (pierrot), we – almost all of us – are clowns (pierrots),” and throughout his life he went on painting clowns and pierrots. He took the sadness and anxiety hidden behind clowns’ gaudy costumes as symbols of humanity’s sorrow, and their softhearted smiles, which seemed to surmount the sadness and anxiety, as symbols of humanity’s salvation.
