Here and there in the Paris of that time, the remains of protective fortifications that had been built around the city could still be found. Rousseau’s nickname “Douanier” (“Customs Officer”) came from the fact that he had worked at a customs house for goods entering Paris, and there were some fortification remains at the place where he had been stationed – Porte de Vanves near the Bois de Boulogne. This work depicts a view in that neighborhood.
