《Gourvelo, Portrieux》

1888 oil, canvas 46.2×55.5cm

This is a work from the period when together with Seurat, Signac was vigorously engaged in experimenting with Neo-Impressionism, or what is termed “Pointillism.” Whereas Seurat gradually came to paint indoor scenes bathed in artificial light, Signac – who was also a yachtsman – loved waterfront scenery all along. The work depicts the harbor of Portrieux, in the north of the Brittany peninsula.
