《Lake Xi Hu, Hangzhou, China》

1944 oil, canvas 72.0×90.7cm

Lake Xihu in the city of Hangzhou in China’s Zhejiang Province is a picturesque spot that has connections with the poet Bai Juyi. Kodera had been commissioned by the Tokyo metropolitan government to attach himself to the military at the front line in China from late 1942 into the following year. He was obliged to produce five paintings of battlefields and war-torn areas, but also painted other works depicting scenic and historic places, such as this picture.
